Hanfu vs Hanbok: Similar Root, Different Result
The Korean hanbok and Chinese hanfu share a distant ancestor in ancient East Asian robes — and both cross the collar right over left. But centuries of separate evolution gave them different proportions, different sleeves, and different energy.
The Quick Answer
Hanbok is the traditional dress of Korea. Like much of Korean court culture, proto-hanbok borrowed heavily from Tang-dynasty China, but the silhouette that survives today is distinctly Korean: women's hanbok has a much shorter, cropped jeogori jacket with a high ribbon (aot) tied at the chest, and a long, full, high-waisted chima (skirt). Hanfu has a longer cross-collar top over a skirt, and the collar crosses at a different line.

Why People Confuse Them
The shared ancestor: Tang dynasty Chinese dress influenced the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Both use the same cross-collar concept and both billow with wide skirts. But by the Koryo and Joseon dynasties, Korea had developed its own look — cropped top, high-ribbon waist, and fuller skirt compared to Hanfu. In photos, the easiest tell is proportion: hanbok looks like volume concentrated in a high, full skirt; Hanfu reads as long vertical lines.
One Easy Memory: The Top
Look at the upper body. Korean hanbok: top is short, ribbon sits at the chest, everything below balloons out. Hanfu: top is longer, down to the knees or hip, collar crosses mid-chest, and the waist sits naturally. Short cropped top + high chest ribbon = hanbok. Longer layered top, natural waist = Hanfu.
